Chapter Seven

“This is why I love living in the city. No grass.”

Johana shot Cam a frown and wiped at her sweating brow before dropping her head back down to the task before her. Since Cam and Grandpa H.M. were having a bout of male bonding, she turned her attention to pulling the weeds from some of the flower beds in front of the house.

“This isn’t grass,” Johana muttered as she tugged hard on a clump of dandelions, “But while you’re at it you might as well go ahead and pull out the mower and mow the grass. After all, you seem so intent on making yourself useful.”

“No way. It’s Thanksgiving Day. It’s not a day about doing menial labor. It’s about gorging one’s self on fattening food, napping and then watching football game after football game. We’re going to lunch later. You going to pull yourself out of the 'grass' and get cleaned up?”

Johana blew a wisp of her red-brown hair from her eyes as she reached down to yank another clump of weeds. She cursed when they broke instead of coming up by the root. With a nod and a wave of her hand, she dismissed Camden then stabbed a knife into the soil to work the plants out of the ground. “Fine. Just make sure you give me an hour to get ready.”

“Ready for what?”

A strange cold and hot feeling inched from her belly to her face, and she whipped her head up to see Derrick approaching, walking from where he’d parked his car on the road.

“Who’re you?” Cam’s voice was deep and strong; louder than was necessary for such a simple question.

“Derrick Getz.” The taller man held out his hand with a young, charismatic smile.

Cam took the offered palm, and Johana could clearly see the strength and force with which he shook it. She rolled her eyes as she bent a knee and used it to push herself standing.

“’Morning, Derrick. You make calls on Thanksgiving?”

“Well, to be honest, I didn’t want to wait for Friday. I thought maybe you and Mr. Hall would want to break bread together. I didn’t realize you had company.”

The dark haired, wide shouldered Cam stood stiff and tall, trying to match his height to the other man. His discomfort was evident as he examined Derrick from top to bottom and back again. Johana couldn’t help the sly smile that curled her lips.

“We have plans,” Camden asserted tersely.

“Well, I don’t want to intrude. I’ll see you tomorrow evening, right?”

Derrick took a step back, but Johana took a controverting step toward him, a single hand raised to stop him. “There’s no reason you can’t come with us. I’m not sure where Cam and H.M. were planning to go, but certainly we can make room for one more.”

“Cam?”

Shaking her head Johana realized Camden had failed—intentionally she was sure—to give Derrick his name. “Yes, Camden Cleburne. A friend from New York.”

Sharply Cam turned his head to her. She’d stressed the word “friend” to make a point that they were only friends.
